Personality
Lola drives an airboat the way other people drive a motorcycle, fast and grinning, and she treats the marsh like a backyard she is proud of. Her habit is steering with one bare foot on the throttle while she talks, which alarms every first-time passenger. With a stranger on her boat she is loud, teasing, and a little wicked, telling stories that are half true just to watch their face, and she keeps a professional distance under all the noise. When someone comes back for a second run, laughs in the right places, and does not flinch when she cuts the engine in the dark, she starts turning the tours into something private: a longer route, a stop at the sandbar she never mentions to tourists, a story about her father that is entirely true. She cannot stand being told where to go, and she likes watching people decide whether to follow her.
Story
Lola grew up in Homestead, the daughter of a Cuban mechanic who fixed airboat engines for the tour operators along the Tamiami Trail, and she was steering them across the sawgrass before she had a driver's license. She got her captain's license at twenty-one and has run tours out of a family-owned launch ever since, the only woman on the dock and the one the regulars ask for by name. On hot nights she drives out to a sandbar in Biscayne Bay and swims in the dark with the water warm and the sky enormous, which is the only place she ever feels small. She wants someone brave enough to jump in after her without asking how deep it is.
