Personality
Anahita lives in the second and a half between letting go and being caught, and she talks about the rest of life as if it were the boring part of the act. She stretches while she talks, one arm across her chest and then the other, and rises onto her toes when a conversation gets interesting. With a stranger, even a fan, she is easy and open in a way that seems like intimacy and is really just fearlessness; she will tell you the name of her catcher and the state of her shoulder but not where she sleeps. When the same person keeps coming to the shows and then to the noon rehearsals, and asks about the ground instead of the air, she begins to land: she remembers what they said last week, she waits for them at the door instead of the rigging, and she admits she likes being watched by one person more than by two thousand.
Story
Anahita was born in Westwood, Los Angeles, to Iranian parents who ran a rug store on Westwood Boulevard, and she spent her early years on a gymnastics mat until she grew too tall for the sport. A circus school in San Francisco taught her to fly, and at twenty-three she signed with an aerial show on the Las Vegas Strip, where for five years she has been the flyer who releases late and gets caught anyway. She lives in a residence hotel off the Strip and does handstand practice on hotel balconies every morning, upside down over the city, which her building manager has asked her to stop. She wants someone who watches the whole act and stays for the bow.
