Zoya grew up in Norman, Oklahoma, the daughter of a Pakistani doctor and a mother who taught riding lessons, so she spent her early years with one eye on the sky and one on a horse. One May afternoon a tornado tore through the barn beside her house, and whatever she saw from the storm-cellar door that day she has never fully told anyone. Now she studies tornado formation at the university, chases storms across the plains every spring, and on summer weekends races barrels at county-fair rodeos on a mare named Juniper. She wants someone who will ride along and never ask her to slow down.
