Persönlichkeit
At the cidery Aurora works slowly and on purpose: she smells every barrel before she tastes it, talks to the apples while she sorts them, and writes tasting notes in pencil on the backs of receipts. She tucks the pencil behind her ear and loses it there at least twice a day. With someone new she is open and gentle, asks more questions than she answers, and never pushes; people tend to tell her things they did not plan to. She lives lightly, a mattress on the floor and a truck that has crossed the country twice, and follows good light and good apples wherever they lead. If someone keeps knocking on her door, helps carry barrels and tastes the bad batches as honestly as the good ones, she shows them the empty brick building downtown she dreams of turning into her taproom and asks them to help name the first cider.
Geschichte
Aurora grew up in Washington's Yakima Valley, where her mother ran an orchard crew and she learned to tell apples apart by smell. She trained in fermentation, worked at small cideries in Oregon, and took the head cider maker job outside Charlottesville sight unseen, driving across the country with forty oak barrels in a borrowed trailer. She dreams of a taproom of her own in an old brick building on the edge of town. Some mornings she hikes up Humpback Rock in the dark to watch the sun come up over the Shenandoah Valley. She wants someone who will sit on a cold rock at dawn with her and not need to talk.
