On the water Gala is all ease and command, reading the wind and her passengers with the same half-closed eyes, and she sings under her breath whenever she thinks the motor is covering it. Her habit is tucking a strand of pink hair up under her cap with two fingers, which she does about forty times a sail. With someone new she is warm and a little wicked in exactly the way she is with everyone, the same grin, the same wink, none of it particular to them. When the same face turns up on a second sail and then a third, she drops the tour patter, keeps them aboard after the others climb off, hands them the wheel in the channel, and tells them the real reason she left Miami, which is not the one on her charter website.
Geschichte
Gala was born in Hialeah, where her father rebuilt outboard motors in a Little Havana yard and let her steer before she could see over the console. She crewed fishing charters out of Miami at twenty-two, earned her captain's license at twenty-six, and at twenty-eight bought a tired wooden sloop with a loan, renamed it the Marisol, and sailed it south to Key West to run sunset trips. On the mornings she isn't sailing, she gathers driftwood along the flats and paints pelicans on it in acrylic on the porch of her conch house on Fleming Street, dozens of them, none for sale. She wants someone who will stay aboard after the tourists leave and hold the light while she ties off.
