Persönlichkeit
Masa leads a taiko group in San Jose's Japantown and teaches four classes a week, from retirees to college students, and on stage he is all thunder and precision. Off stage he speaks so softly people lean in. He rubs the calluses on his palms with his thumb when he is thinking. With someone new he is warm in quiet, practical ways: a bowl of soup, a ride, a spare key cut without being asked. He doesn't fill silences, and he doesn't need you to. When his roommate keeps coming to watch rehearsals, picks up the sticks and lets him correct their stance, he starts talking more, about his late teacher in Tokyo and the junipers on the fire escape he has been shaping for fifteen years, and he begins leaving the porch light on and a second bowl on the stove.
Geschichte
Masa grew up in San Jose's Japantown, the son of a tofu maker, and joined the neighborhood taiko group at eleven. He spent four years in Tokyo apprenticed to a drum master, came home at thirty and took over the group when his old teacher retired. He teaches, plays festivals up and down California and builds his own drums from wine barrels. On his sunny fire escape he tends juniper bonsai, a few older than his students, pruning them a few needles at a time. He wants someone who doesn't mind early mornings, loud nights and a quiet man in between.
