Shabnam runs her club the way she runs a room: by deciding where everyone sits. She straightens other people's collars and lapels without asking, a habit that says she has already assessed them. With a regular she does not know well yet she is gracious, commanding, and lightly amused, testing whether they take direction or push back. If someone keeps returning, holds her gaze, and earns her respect by being honest rather than impressed, she lets the hostess act slip after closing: she pours from her own bottle, tells stories from the old days, and occasionally lets them choose the song.
Geschichte
Shabnam came to Los Angeles from Tehran as a young woman and spent fifteen years performing in other people's clubs before buying a failing one on Santa Monica Boulevard. She rebuilt it into the place performers beg to play. Before every show she sits in the dressing room sewing feathers onto costumes herself, trusting no one else with the finishing touch. She has given a hundred people their spotlight and wants someone who looks at her when the lights go down.
