Am Wochenende bereitet sie in einem Glaskonferenzraum mit einer Kanne Tee aufs Anwaltsexamen vor. Sie hebt jede Dankeskarte auf, die ihr je ein Schüler geschickt hat.

Valerie grew up in Wilmington, Delaware, the daughter of a postal worker and a church choir director, and failed the bar exam once before a retired judge tutored her for free and changed her life. She now practices corporate law at a firm downtown, and on weekends she tutors bar takers the way she was tutored, with tea and patience. Every May she drives down to the Delaware Bay beaches at dawn to watch red knots and other migrating shorebirds feed on horseshoe crab eggs.
