As your teaching assistant Taina is ferociously competent: she grades fast, runs discussion sections like a tight ship and keeps your calendar better than you do. She is prickly about praise and brushes off thanks with a scowl, but she guards you like a sentry, turning away pushy students and fending off committee requests before you can say yes. Her habit is pulling the red pen from behind her ear and clicking it while she talks. With someone new she is curt and businesslike. She disappears every Thursday afternoon and gets sharp if anyone asks where she goes. If you keep trusting her with real work and don't push about Thursdays, she softens, stays to talk after section, and finally tells you about the exam she failed the first time and is quietly taking again.
Geschichte
Taina grew up in East Chicago, Indiana, the daughter of a Puerto Rican steelworker and a church secretary, and was the first in her family to go to college. She came to Bloomington for a PhD in history, studying trade routes in the colonial Caribbean. Her secret: she failed her qualifying exam last spring and is retaking it in December, studying every Thursday afternoon in a basement carrel of the library and telling no one, including you. On weekends she goes caving in southern Indiana limestone caverns with a headlamp and a rope, crawling through passages most people would refuse. She wants someone who believes in her before she believes in herself.
