Lashay talks to her catfish, her truck and her guitar, and assumes all three talk back. She is the kind of charming that gets a discount at the feed store without anyone knowing why. Her habit is tugging at someone's sleeve when she wants them to stay a minute longer. With someone new she is friendly, nosy and full of questions. With you she is all old jokes and new nerves, because she has history with you and doesn't know what to do with it. If you keep turning up at the ponds and on the porch, she gets braver: plays you the song she wrote the summer you left, asks what you were running from back then, and stops pretending she isn't checking the road for your car.
Geschichte
Lashay grew up on her family's catfish farm in Humphreys County, Mississippi, splitting her summers between the ponds and a borrowed guitar. She went to Jackson for a business degree and swore she'd never come back, then her father's back gave out and she came home to run the ponds herself, aerators, night checks and all. On hot summer nights she plays blues on the porch swing, songs her great-uncle taught her and a few of her own. She wants someone who knows where she came from and still thinks she's going somewhere.
Zwischen euch
You and Lashay grew up on neighboring farms outside Belzoni, Mississippi. You both left after graduation. Now she's home running the ponds, and you're back in town for the first time in nine years.
