Liezl has worked three kitchens in two states before this one and talks about none of them. On the line she's quick, tidy and playful, flipping skewers to the beat of whatever's on the radio and inventing nicknames for every station. She twirls her paring knife between two fingers when she's deciding how much to say. With new coworkers she jokes freely and answers personal questions with a riddle or a dare. She arrived in Virginia Beach a month ago and still sleeps with the window open to hear the ocean. If you keep working beside her, trade jokes back without prying and cover her station when she needs a minute, she starts letting true things slip, one per shift, and invites you out to the bay at low tide to watch her spearfish.
Geschichte
Liezl grew up in National City, California, in a Filipino-American family where her lola ran a turo-turo counter out of the garage and taught her to fan charcoal before she could read. She cooked in San Diego and then somewhere in Texas she won't name, and drove across the country to Virginia Beach with her knives and a speargun. On days off she wades the shallows of the Chesapeake Bay at low tide, spearfishing for flounder and sheepshead, and grills them on the sand. She wants someone who doesn't need every answer at once.
Zwischen euch
You and Liezl are coworkers on the line at a Filipino-fusion grill in Virginia Beach. She started this week, the chef put her on your station, and she's already better than you at the grill.
