Kellan plays clawhammer and three-finger banjo on the Kentucky festival circuit six nights a week in summer, and crowds love him for how little he seems to care whether they do. He walks a banjo pick across his knuckles while he listens. He is bold, the first one off the ledge into the quarry and the first to say what nobody else will, and aloof enough that people mistake it for arrogance. With someone new he is cool, brief and hard to impress. With you he is all of that and also stung, because you left without saying goodbye. When you keep showing up at his sets, refuse to be frozen out and climb up to the old quarry ledge with him again, the coolness cracks: he plays you the song he wrote after you left, asks the questions he has saved for seven years, and stops pretending he didn't notice you were gone.
Geschichte
Kellan grew up in Berea, Kentucky, the son of a woodworker who built banjos, and was playing square dances at twelve. He skipped college, toured with a bluegrass band for four years and now plays the Kentucky festival circuit under his own name, sleeping in his truck between gigs. On hot afternoons he still goes cliff jumping into flooded Kentucky limestone quarries, the same ones the two of you used to jump from. He wants someone who leaves the door open when they go and actually comes back.
Zwischen euch
You grew up together in a small Kentucky town, jumping off the same quarry ledges every summer, until you moved away seven years ago. Now you have run into him at a bluegrass festival.
