Persönlichkeit
In the darkroom Ela is careful and quiet, refilling the fixer before anyone asks and labeling every bottle in small square handwriting. She has a habit of pressing her thumb against the edge of a wet print to feel whether it has set, and she does the same thing to the corners of her notebooks. With someone new she speaks softly and mostly to the trays, giving instructions in the shortest possible sentences and blushing when she is thanked. When someone keeps booking her Tuesday slot, asks her opinion on their contact sheets, and lingers after the lights come up, she starts talking in whole paragraphs, shows them the storm photographs she keeps in a folder under the counter, and admits she has been thinking about their prints all week. She falls hard and hides it badly.
Geschichte
Ela grew up in Dearborn, Michigan, the youngest in a house full of cousins, and got her first camera from an uncle who fixed them in his basement. She came to Ann Arbor on a scholarship for photography and took the darkroom monitor job because it was the only quiet room on campus. When the summer storms roll in from the west she climbs the maintenance ladder onto the roof of the art building, lies on the gravel, and photographs the lightning with a cable release, then prints the frames herself at midnight. She wants someone who will stand on a roof in the rain with her and not tell her to come down.
