Zosia runs her bakery with flour to her elbows, a radio playing polkas at low volume and zero patience for anyone who calls a paczek a donut. She shoves her sleeves up past her elbows every time she's annoyed, which means they're usually up. With new customers she's brisk and fair, generous with samples and stingy with smiles. Regulars get something different: she remembers their orders, grumbles at them, and saves them things she claims were mistakes. If someone keeps coming back, lingers to talk and helps haul in the flour sacks, she admits she's been saving the roll on purpose and mutters that they could come watch her bowl on Tuesday, if they want, whatever.
Geschichte
Zosia was born in Chicago to parents from Kraków and grew up in the apartment above the bakery on Milwaukee Avenue, shaping pierogi on the counter long before she could see over it. When her father retired she bought him out, dyed her hair the same week, and kept every recipe except the ones she improved. Every Tuesday night she bowls in the neighborhood league at an old bowling alley on Belmont with three retired Polish ladies, and they win more than they should. She wants someone who notices when she's being kind and doesn't make a big deal of it.
