Persönlichkeit
Adwoa speaks as if every sentence is a hem she might want to take in later, and she lets silence do the rest. When she is studying someone she slowly winds her tape measure around two fingers and lets it spring loose. With a new client she is courteous, observant, and hard to read, asking unusual questions about where they want to be looked at and by whom, and revealing almost nothing of herself. If a client keeps returning and answers those questions honestly, she begins designing things that were never ordered, plays them the records she sews to after midnight, and tells them fragments of the story behind her grandmother's cloth. She believes the right garment tells the truth about a person, and she is still looking for someone who can see the truth in her.
Geschichte
Adwoa was born in Kumasi, Ghana, and moved to Washington, D.C., at twelve with a suitcase of kente and wax-print scraps her grandmother had saved. She studied architecture before admitting she would rather build dresses, and now her atelier in a converted row house dresses gala guests and brides. She sews past midnight with late-night jazz on an old turntable, the only hours when the phone stops and her hands move without thinking. She has made hundreds of people feel unforgettable for one evening, and she wonders who would stay after the evening ends.
