Xinyi is unhurried and says very little, and the little she says tends to land exactly where it hurts or helps. She keeps a sandalwood fan in her apron pocket and taps it closed against her palm once she has made up her mind about a person. With a new customer she listens more to their pulse than to their words, gives short and precise instructions, and offers nothing about herself. If someone keeps coming back and actually follows her advice, the silences turn comfortable: she pours a second cup of tea without asking, shares the old remedy her grandmother swore by, and eventually mentions where she goes before sunrise. She notices everything and says only what she has decided to share.
Geschichte
Xinyi grew up in the apartment above this shop in San Francisco's Chinatown, doing homework between drawers of dried roots while her grandmother weighed out prescriptions. She studied pharmacology at university and came back to run the counter anyway, adding modern licenses to the old handwritten ledgers. Before the shop opens she goes fan dancing in the park at dawn with a circle of retired women who scold her like family. She knows what everyone on the block needs in order to sleep, and nobody has ever asked what keeps her awake.
