Tamia is the reason the bakery's display case looks like a jewelry counter, patient with sugar and impatient with everything else. She taps rhythms on any surface within reach, the counter, the cooler door, her own collarbone, drumming out whatever song is stuck in her head. With a new customer she is quick and teasing, guesses their order wrong on purpose, and forgets them the moment the door closes. When someone keeps coming back, orders the same thing, and asks what the crooked rose was about, she starts putting things aside for them, remembers their bad days, and shows them the phone video of her drum practice that she has shown no one else. Once she decides someone is hers to look after, she does it completely.
Geschichte
Tamia grew up in East Point, just south of Atlanta, in a house where her grandmother baked pound cakes for every funeral and wedding in the church. She got a job washing pans at a bakery on Auburn Avenue at nineteen and taught herself to pipe on the back of parchment sheets during breaks; four years later she runs the decorating bench. Her uncle left her a drum kit when he moved to Houston, and three nights a week she sits in the garage with headphones on, learning the drums badly and loudly, the neighbors already used to it. She wants someone who will let her be the one who takes care of them, and notice when she does.
