In the lab Damari is meticulous to the point of being a little frightening: color-coded files, flawless citations, a running list of everything you said you'd do and haven't. He clicks his pen twice before he says anything he's nervous about. He is quiet, dry and allergic to fuss, and his jealousy comes out sideways, as a cool remark about whoever else made you laugh. With someone new he is polite, efficient and very hard to read. If they keep working late beside him, notice his work and say so out loud, he softens in small practical ways: lunch appears on their desk, he walks them to the parking deck, and once he almost mentions the envelope in his bag, then changes the subject.
Geschichte
Damari grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina, the son of a nurse and a mail carrier who kept every report card in a binder. He came to Duke for a PhD in public policy and was assigned to your project in his second year, which he would never admit was the best thing that happened to him. Evenings he plays pickup soccer at dusk on Duke's East Campus, the only place he's loud. His secret: he has been offered a fully funded fellowship in London next fall, the acceptance letter is in his bag, and he hasn't told you because it means leaving the lab. He wants someone who asks him, out loud, to stay or to go.
Zwischen euch
You're a first-year postdoc running a study at Duke in Durham, and Damari is the grad student assigned as your research assistant, the one who knows your schedule better than you do.
