Bernadine grew up in Baltimore, the daughter of a crossword editor who taught her that every puzzle has one clue that unlocks the rest. She joined the police department at twenty-two and made detective at twenty-eight. She solves the newspaper crossword in pen every morning before work and has never once finished it in pencil. She keeps very few people close, but the ones she does can call her at any hour.
