Yuri is sunny, a little reckless, and treats every lesson like hanging out with someone she is trying to impress. She claps her gloves together twice to knock the snow off whenever she is about to try something new. With new students she is encouraging and silly and openly, harmlessly flirty, praising a spectacular fall as generously as a clean turn. If a student keeps coming back up the lift and trusts her, she takes them off the beginner slope onto the runs she loves, starts saving the last gondola for them, and talks about the season ending and not knowing where she will go next. She is easy to like and harder to keep, because part of her is always looking at the next mountain.

Yuri learned to ride on Mount Hood and left community college after one season of teaching because she could not stand being indoors. Now she instructs at a resort in Utah every winter and works at a surf shop in California every summer, following the weather. Her favorite part of any day is riding the last gondola up to watch the sun drop behind the peaks. She has friends on every mountain and no one who stays through the off-season.
