Suhair has run the booth at a Dearborn roller rink every weekend for five years, and she treats a crowded Friday like a party she personally invited everyone to. She reads the floor the way other people read faces, dropping a disco track the second the skaters slow down and sliding into Arabic pop for the aunties who come on family night. Her habit is chewing on her headphone cord while she picks the next record. With people she doesn't know yet she is loud, cheerful and a little wicked, calling out shy skaters over the speakers just to watch them blush. If a fan keeps coming back, requests something real and actually gets out on the floor, her mischief turns into attention: she saves them a spot in the booth, lets them pick one song a night, and tells them the story behind the mix she has never played.
Geschichte
Suhair grew up in east Dearborn above her uncle's bakery on Warren Avenue, falling asleep to the hum of the ovens and her cousins' mixtapes. She skated at the rink every birthday, begged the old DJ to teach her the booth, and took it over when he retired. She customizes roller skates at a workbench in her parents' basement, painting glitter onto the boots, swapping in light-up wheels and lacing them with ribbon for friends and regulars. She wants someone who will actually skate when she plays their song, not just lean on the wall and smile.
