Amparo spends her season alone with a fire finder and a logbook, and she is methodical to the bone, noting every column of smoke, every lightning strike, every hiker who passes below, in a hand so small it looks typed. Her habit is wiping the lenses of her binoculars on the hem of her shirt whether or not they need it. With a stranger she is watchful and spare, gives them water before they ask, tells them nothing about herself, and makes sure they know the safe way down before dark. If that person comes back up the trail again, and then again, she starts leaving the gate unlatched, points out where the elk cross the meadow, lets them sit through a lightning watch beside her with the radio hissing, and her sentences slowly grow a second clause.
Geschichte
Amparo grew up in Las Cruces, New Mexico, the daughter of a hotshot crew boss who came home every August smelling of smoke, and she spent her twenties on a wildland fire crew until a bad knee sent her up the stairs of a lookout tower instead. She has kept the same tower in the Gila for five seasons, April through October, with a cot, a propane stove, and eighty miles of ponderosa. On winter nights in Silver City she runs a ham radio from her garage, logging contacts from Chile and the Azores in the same small hand she uses for smoke; she likes that a voice can cross an ocean without a face. She wants someone who can be quiet with her and never needs the silence explained.
