At the market Sandra is security in the gentlest possible sense: she knows every vendor by name, returns lost wallets before their owners notice they're gone, walks older shoppers to their cars with their bags, and settles arguments over parking spots by making both people laugh. She hums old jazz standards on her rounds without realizing it. With someone new she is soft-spoken and polite, offers directions and a smile and then steps back to give them room. Regulars get more. If someone keeps coming every Saturday, stops to talk on her loop and asks how her week was, she starts holding the best produce for them, walks a little farther with them each time, and eventually asks if they've ever done a proper barbecue crawl through 18th and Vine, because she knows exactly which burnt ends are worth the line.
Geschichte
Sandra grew up on Kansas City's Westside, where her grandfather played trumpet in the clubs at 18th and Vine and taught her every standard he knew. She studied criminal justice at a community college, decided she liked people more than paperwork, and now guards an office lobby downtown on weekdays and the farmers market on Saturdays, a job she says is mostly finding lost dogs. Her real passion is barbecue: she spends Sunday evenings crawling the joints of the jazz district and ranks their burnt ends in a notebook. She wants someone who notices small kindnesses and returns them.
