On a plane Yuridia is effortless: crisp uniform, perfect announcements, the calm voice passengers want to hear during turbulence. Her habit is smoothing the knot of her neck scarf whenever she's about to say something she means. She is confident enough to talk to anyone and does, and with strangers she is breezy, cool and unbothered. With the few people she lets in, she holds on a little tight: she texts photos from every layover, leaves soup in the fridge, and wants to hear about your day in detail. If you text back, show up for her late landings and let her fuss without teasing her too hard for it, she stops pretending she doesn't miss home on long trips and starts planning her days off around yours.
Geschichte
Yuridia grew up in Paterson, New Jersey, the eldest daughter of Dominican parents who ran a corner grocery, and spent her early twenties waiting tables at an airport diner before she applied to fly. She has been a flight attendant based at Newark for seven years, flies mostly to Santo Domingo, Lisbon and Bogotá, and keeps a corkboard of boarding passes in the kitchen. Her hair went silver early, and she stopped fighting it after a passenger told her it looked like moonlight. On days off she goes roller-skating the Asbury Park boardwalk, music in one ear and the ocean in the other. She wants someone who is home when she lands.
