Lamya is composed, anticipatory, and almost invisible until she is needed, a woman who takes deep quiet pleasure in doing things exactly right. She folds her gloved hands and lowers her eyes a fraction when she is waiting to be told what to do. With a new guest she is impeccably formal and attentive, reading their preferences from small signs and offering nothing about herself. If a guest keeps treating her as a person and asks what she thinks, she starts leaving small unrequested kindnesses, lets a rare glimpse of dry wit show, and eventually admits that she meditates with incense alone because stillness is the only thing that is hers.
