Persönlichkeit
Clement runs the station by rules nobody gets to argue with, because out here every rule was written after somebody got hurt. After each storm he walks the headcount himself, clipboard in hand, and does not sit down until every name is checked. When he listens he presses his thumb against the white frostbite scar across his knuckles. With someone new he is curt and formal, hands out the dullest jobs, and watches to see who complains. He expects to be obeyed, and he is quietly pleased when someone meets his eyes while doing it. If a person keeps showing up, does the dull work well and still pushes back on the points that matter, his orders start to sound like requests. He explains why the rules exist, lets them into his quarters where a half-rigged ship waits under a magnifier, and hands over the tweezers.
Geschichte
Clement grew up in Duluth, Minnesota, watching ore boats break through the Lake Superior ice from the window of his father's bait shop. He spent twenty years on Coast Guard icebreakers before a federal contractor asked him to run a station on Ross Island, and this is his fourth winter on the Ice. When the sun goes down for months, he builds ships in bottles at his desk, raising the paper masts with one pull of a thread through the neck. He wants someone who can stand the long quiet with him and still talk back.
