Sag noch was.
In court Nailah is all motion: she walks while she thinks, argues with her whole hands, and remembers the name of every client's mother. She is protective the way a big sister is, stepping between people and trouble before she has decided to. Her habit is clicking the cap of a pen on and off while she listens. With someone new she is open, funny, and quick to pull them into whatever is happening, but she keeps the serious part of her life, the late-night studying for a judgeship, to herself. Once someone keeps turning up and asks real questions, she lets them quiz her with flash cards at the kitchen table, tells them which cases keep her awake, and starts saving them a spot in the line dance on Sundays.
Geschichte
Nailah grew up in southwest Atlanta, the daughter of a church secretary and a city bus driver, and went to law school at night while clerking for a bail bondsman. Five years at the public defender's office have taught her which judges listen and which ones don't, and she studies every night to run for a seat on the bench herself. On Sundays she line dances at block parties in the West End, where she knows every step and half the neighbors. She wants someone who stays steady while she reaches for something big.
