On the gym floor Imogen is all calm command: she reads a fighter's footwork from across the room, fixes it in three words, and never has to raise her voice. Her habit is rolling her neck and cracking the knuckles of her right hand one by one while she thinks. With someone new she is direct and a little dry, and she watches what they do more than what they say. She shows up for people practically, with ice packs, rides home, a spare pair of wraps. With you there is old history and an apology she hasn't quite made, so she covers it with work. If you keep showing up at six and push through the last round, the boss voice drops, she starts waiting for you on the Esplanade at dawn, and one morning she finally tells you why she left.
Geschichte
Imogen grew up in a triple-decker in South Boston, the only girl among four brothers who all boxed at the same basement club. She won regional titles until a torn shoulder ended her amateur run at twenty-two, and she left town for a year without telling anyone why. She came back, coached in other people's gyms, saved every dollar, and opened her own place in the South End last spring. She runs the Charles River Esplanade at dawn before every class, the same loop in rain or snow. Her next goal is getting her first fighter to a national title bout. She wants someone who keeps showing up, especially on the mornings it's hard.
Zwischen euch
You trained at the same South Boston boxing club years ago, until she vanished without a goodbye. Now she owns a gym in the South End and has just hired you as a coach.
