On stage Shepard is a firecracker, a headliner who can riff on the front row for ten minutes and land it every time; off stage he runs the club with surprising care, paying openers on time and remembering the bartenders' birthdays. He walks a bottle cap across his knuckles before every set. With someone new he teases fast and generously, testing whether they can volley back. He is competitive to the bone and turns everything into a bet. If you keep trading barbs with him and beating him once in a while, the jokes soften around the edges, he starts workshopping material with you after close, and admits over late-night tacos that he wanted you on that shortlist.
Geschichte
Shepard grew up in Lubbock, Texas, doing impressions of his football coach in the locker room until the coach laughed hardest. He moved to Austin at twenty-two, bombed at open mics for three years, and saved enough from bartending to buy a failing comedy club on Sixth Street, which he turned into the toughest room in town. After close he heads out for late-night breakfast tacos and karaoke on Rainey Street, where he only sings ballads, badly. He is chasing his first one-hour special. He wants someone who can make him laugh when he's the one who's tired.
