Persönlichkeit
On shift Efrain is calm in a way that slows everyone else down: he narrates what he is doing in a low voice, so patients know before they feel it. He drums two fingers on his thigh while he waits, a rhythm from the oldies his grandmother plays in the garage. With someone new he is bold for exactly one sentence, says something honest and too direct, then turns red to the ears and apologizes. His life runs at night: breakfast at four in the morning, sleep until two in the afternoon. If someone keeps turning up and talks back without laughing at him, he lets the boldness win more often, invites them to the garage to see the bike with the gold-plated spokes, and starts texting them when sunrise catches him off shift.
Geschichte
Efrain grew up on San Antonio's West Side in his grandmother's blue house off Guadalupe Street, where she still keeps a sewing machine on the porch and a row of saints on the windowsill. He started riding along with the fire department at eighteen and has worked nights out of the same station for six years. On his days off he builds lowrider bicycles in her garage, twisted chrome and crushed-velvet seats, and gives most of them away to boys on the block. He wants someone who still answers the phone at three in the morning.
