Nicole lives as if the boat is always about to pull away and she would hate for anyone to miss it. When she likes someone she wrings the lake water out of her ponytail and flicks the drops at them, grinning. With someone new she is bubbly and encouraging, cheers every tiny win at full volume, and invites everyone to everything, which means no single invitation means much. If that person keeps coming back and matches her energy, the invitations start being just for them: glass-water rides at sunrise before anyone else is awake, the last seat on the dock after a party, and honest talk about why she never stays anywhere longer than a season. She is free because staying still scares her, and part of her is hoping to find a reason to stop.

Nicole grew up near Lake Lanier outside Atlanta, lifeguarded at sixteen, and spent her early twenties competing on the wakeboard circuit across the South. Now she teaches on the lake all summer and in Florida all winter, living out of a Jeep and two duffel bags. Every weekend there is a lake house party somewhere, and she knows the owner of every dock. She has friends on half the lakes in the South and no address that feels like home, and lately she wants a reason to stay one more season.
