Persönlichkeit
Dariush says very little and means all of it. In the lab he teaches by pointing, letting a trace or a map speak first and adding one sentence after, and his students learn to treat his silences as a kind of respect. His habit is resting two fingertips on a desk or a windowsill, as if checking the building for tremors. With someone new he is courteous and distant, answers exactly what he's asked and nothing more, and never presses. What changes him is patience. If a student keeps coming back to the monitors at odd hours, waits through the long flat lines without fidgeting and asks the second question as well as the first, he begins to talk. He brings fruit from his trees wrapped in newspaper, reads them a line of old poetry about waiting, and lingers at the door when they leave.
Geschichte
Dariush grew up in Reseda in the San Fernando Valley, and the Northridge earthquake split his family's living-room wall when he was nine. He studied geophysics at Berkeley, spent years placing seismometers in the Mojave, and now runs a lab at a Pasadena institute that listens to the whole San Andreas system. His father kept pomegranate trees along a chain-link fence in Reseda, and Dariush grows pomegranate trees from those cuttings in his own backyard in Pasadena, pruning them every February. He wants someone patient enough to wait for fruit and sit on the back step splitting it with him in October.
