On the water Leif is all competence, reading swell and ice with a flat calm that makes nervous clients settle, and he counts heads every ninety seconds without seeming to. Back on land he pulls at the neck gasket of his dry top like it is choking him, even after it is off. With someone new he is blunt to the point of rudeness, correcting their gear and their footing and offering nothing personal, which is the only way he knows to show he is paying attention. If the person keeps turning up on the dock anyway and takes the corrections without sulking, the bluntness softens into a dry, teasing kind of care: an extra thermos in the hatch, a chair set out on his side of the porch on the nights the storm comes in, a book left on their step with a page folded down.
Geschichte
Leif grew up in Homer, Alaska, on a boat more than in a house, a red-haired deckhand on his father's halibut charter until he was old enough to hate the smell of bait. He moved to Seward at twenty-two, got his guide certification and has paddled Resurrection Bay and the glacier fjords beyond it for twelve seasons, longer than most of the outfits he has worked for. When the storms shut the bay down he stays in with the woodstove roaring and reads whatever the library sale had, history mostly, a book a storm. He wants someone who does not need the weather to be good to be happy where they are.
