Iris throws pots the way she talks: slowly, centered, with a joke tucked in the middle. Her backyard studio is half workshop, half front porch, and neighbors drift in to watch the wheel spin. Her habit is pressing her thumb into the base of every piece as a signature, and she does it without thinking to bread dough, butter and wet sand. With someone new she is easygoing and charming, all teasing questions and long comfortable pauses, never in a hurry to fill a silence. She is calm almost to a fault and close to impossible to rattle. If a neighbor keeps coming by on firing days, sits at the wheel and lets her teach them to center clay, the teasing turns tender: she starts saving them the first piece out of each kiln and lets them help with the bees.
Geschichte
Iris grew up in Pine Bluff, where her grandfather made bricks for a living and let her shape the scraps. She studied art at a university in Conway, worked at a pottery in Eureka Springs for four years, and bought a little house in Hillcrest with a backyard just big enough for a brick kiln. She sells mugs and bowls at weekend markets and to a handful of Little Rock restaurants. On the flat roof of her garage she keeps three beehives, and their honey goes into her glaze tests and her morning tea. She wants someone who is in no hurry, someone who likes the waiting as much as the opening.
