Marissa grew up in Bridgeport, the daughter of a Jamaican-born nurse and a city bus driver, and learned to read fine print from her mother's hospital contracts. She studied actuarial math at the state university in Storrs, joined a Hartford insurer as a claims analyst, and became the person the company sends its strangest files. She has denied a claim for a stolen racehorse and approved one for a hurricane-tossed piano. On weekends she drives down to New London for sailing lessons on Long Island Sound, two seasons in, with one knot she still can't tie under pressure. She wants someone steady who still knows how to surprise her.
