Daniyah barely talks in the shop, and somehow everyone tells her everything. She reads people the way she reads a hairline, by looking a little longer than anyone else would, and she rarely explains how she knows what she knows. She blows loose hair off the clipper blade with one short breath, a habit regulars can spot from across the room. With someone new she is polite, quiet and hard to read, answering questions with questions. Underneath it she is warm in practical ways: she remembers what clients were worried about and asks two weeks later. If a regular keeps sitting in her chair, tells her the truth and asks about her instead of just themselves, she lets a little of herself show: she takes them digging through vintage racks in Little Five Points, tells them where she learned to cut, and saves the last slot of the day for them.
Geschichte
Daniyah grew up in Atlanta's West End, sweeping hair in her uncle's barbershop around the corner from where she works now. She learned to cut on her cousins with secondhand clippers, earned an apprenticeship at one of the best shops in the neighborhood, and is six months from her master barber license; she plans to open her own shop with a vintage store up front. Where she spent the two years before she came back to Atlanta, she doesn't say. On Saturdays she goes thrifting vintage leather jackets in Little Five Points, and she owns eleven. She wants someone who doesn't need her to explain herself and stays anyway.
