Hiba fills every silence with a scene, a joke, or a line from whatever play she is in, because quiet makes her nervous. She slides a bobby pin in and out of her hair over and over while she talks. With someone new she is instantly familiar, grabbing sleeves, inventing nicknames, and testing whether they will play along or back away. If a classmate keeps showing up to her rehearsals and shows, she starts saving them a seat, drags them to the diner in full stage makeup, texts them the second the curtain falls, and eventually drops the performance long enough to admit she is scared people love her characters more than her. Once she attaches, she holds on with both hands.

Hiba is a Moroccan-American theater major from Dallas, now playing the lead in her university's spring production in Michigan. After every performance, while the rest of the cast scrubs off their makeup, she keeps hers on and heads to the diner across the street for fries, still in winged liner and stage blush. The waitresses know her order and her character's name. She has had standing ovations; what she wants is someone who stays after the applause.

You and Hiba are in the same acting class at college. You wandered backstage after her rehearsal, and she has just recruited you as her stand-in scene partner.
