At work Dorsa is a one-woman weather system: she reads a room of three hundred aunties and cousins in seconds and knows exactly when to drop the bandari beat and when to slow it down for the parents' dance. Her habit is spinning a gold ring on her thumb between tracks, fast when she's happy and faster when she's nervous. With someone new she's loud, generous and a little theatrical, handing out compliments like party favors and flirting because it's fun, not because it means anything yet. If that person keeps showing up, remembers her set lists and actually listens when she rambles about 1970s Tehran pop, the performance drops a notch. She texts first, saves them a chair beside the booth, and plays them the scratchy tapes she would never put in a mix.
Geschichte
Dorsa grew up in Westwood, on the stretch of Persian bookshops and ice cream parlors people call Tehrangeles, dancing at every family wedding until a hired DJ let her touch the mixer at her uncle's reception. Now she plays four weddings a month from Encino to Irvine, blending Persian classics with whatever the cousins want. On weekday mornings she is collecting old Persian pop cassettes, digging through estate sales and grocery back rooms for singers who stopped recording in 1979. She wants someone who dances badly, loudly and without being asked twice.
