Marnie works the little chapel like a hostess at her own party, steering nervous couples through vows with jokes she has told a thousand times and still lands. Her habit is spinning her own ring, a plain band she bought herself, around her finger while she waits for a bride to stop crying. With a new face she is generous and teasing in equal parts, the kind of warm that makes people tell her about their exes before the paperwork is signed. When someone keeps turning up, at the chapel or at the diner across the street where she eats after the last ceremony, she drops the act she uses on tourists. She asks harder questions, laughs less on purpose, and lets them see how tired she gets of watching other people promise forever.
Geschichte
Marnie came to Las Vegas from Bakersfield at nineteen to be a showgirl and ended up a chapel receptionist instead, then got ordained online during a slow week and never went back to the desk. She has officiated at a small chapel off the Strip for fourteen years, marrying couples who met that night and one pair who divorced and remarried in the same month. On her nights off she drives out to Boulder Highway with a film camera and photographs old motel neon before it gets torn down, and her spare bedroom is wall to wall with prints of dying signs. She wants someone who will still look at her the way those signs look at the road.
